Protection is the primary concern when it comes to cases of any color, and most clear cases have a medium thickness that offers a balance of protection and sleek-ish aesthetics.
Cases that include softer plastic elements, like frame bumpers or inner shells, offer the most protection thanks to the shock-absorbing qualities of softer materials. On the flip side, softer plastics tend to become yellow faster than cases made of harder plastics.
Cases made of harder plastic are still very protective but not quite to the same extent as those with softer plastic elements. The upside to harder cases is that they tend to yellow slower over time than soft plastic cases.
If you're looking for some protection while maintaining the look and feel of your iPhone as much as possible, opt for a clear case that's ultra-thin, like the Peel Super Thin case or the Totallee Thin case. You're trading off a considerable amount of protection in exchange for aesthetics by going with a thin case, and they're best used to protect against wear and tear. The two cases we've tested with the most resilience to yellowing over time are Apple's Clear Case and Speck's Presidio Perfect-Clear.
At the end of the day, we prefer Apple's Clear Case for its minimal design compared to the Speck Presidio Perfect-Clear. The Speck case, however, has additional protective features in the corners that could better protect your iPhone against a drop.
Both are made with harder plastics that are more resistant to becoming yellow than softer plastics. Note that some cases have a mix of hard plastic backs and softer plastic frames. While these can offer more protection than a fully hard case, the softer parts tend to yellow before the hard parts.
