Sold for €3490, the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T ultra short throw video projector is intended to replace a large TV in a living room by projecting on a screen or directly on the wall. Do its image quality and functions equal those of the best Ultra HD 4K TVs on the market?

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T: the brand

Founded in 1938, Samsung Corporation is a leading specialist in electronic devices for business and consumers. Telephones, micro-computing, multimedia, household appliances, semiconductors: Samsung is omnipresent. The Korean group even owns a shipyard as well as a construction organization, with the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, which is the highest building in the world at 828m.

Samsung: leading TV manufacturer

Samsung is currently the world market leader for LED TVs, 4K Ultra HD TVs and 8K Ultra HD TVs. Samsung QLED TVs rival OLED TVs with high peak brightness for displaying HDR images, rich colors and a highly effective anti-reflection filter.

Samsung and projection

Faced with the growing demand for larger and larger images, Samsung turned to video projection with the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T to offer an alternative to its 4K and 8K Ultra HD TVs.

This isn’t the Korean manufacturer’s first foray into this field; in the late 2000s it already had several projectors in its catalog, including the magnificent Samsung SP-A600BX. At the time, this 1080p DLP model even received a Hit Matérial award from the Les Années Laser magazine.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T: presentation

Ultra HD 4K picture, HDR10+ compatibility, DTT tuner, HDMI inputs and a multimedia USB port, 2.2 channel surround sound audio section, Smart TV features with access to Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video: the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T projector has all the features of a state-of-the-art 4K TV except for the screen, replaced by an ultra-short throw DLP projection system with a laser that has an estimated lifespan of at least 20,000 hours.

An image size of up to 3 meters!

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T UST projector is designed to provide a very large image at a very short distance from the projection screen or the wall on which the image is projected. An image size of 90 inches across (2.28m diagonal, 2m base) can be achieved by placing the projector just under 25cm away from the wall. The maximum image size is 120 inches across (3.04m diagonal, 2.65m base) at a distance of only 41.5cm.

A projector to replace the TV

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T 4K projector can easily replace the television in a living room because it is equipped with a DTT tuner. Its HDMI connectors allow it to be connected to different sources, such as a 4K Blu-ray player, a network media player or a video game console, without requiring long cables as these electronics can be accommodated in the same TV cabinet as the projector.

To ensure the picture is always clear and centered, the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T UST projector is equipped with a motorized focus system and digital keystone correction.

4K Ultra High Definition, laser

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T ultra short throw projector is equipped with a DLP matrix capable of displaying a 16:9 image in 4K Ultra High Definition. The laser, which offers a maximum brightness of 2200 lumens, is paired with a chromatic wheel with four colors (yellow, red, green, blue). It has an estimated lifespan of 20,000 hours, which is over 18 years of use at a rate of 3 hours a day. To avoid damaging your eyesight if you get too close, the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T uses a proximity sensor that greatly reduces the brightness of the laser when activated.

The projector can reproduce a clear image with rich and nuanced colors in a partially lit room, but only if you have a projection screen with a technical canvas (such as the Lumene Movie Palace UHD 4K Extra Bright 240C, for example) or a wall that is more gray than white. As with most video projectors, the ideal environment is a semi-dark or completely dark room.

HRD10 and HDR10+ compatibility

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T 4K laser projector is HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatible and supports HDR10+ and Hybrid Log Gamma formats. Capable of delivering high brightness peaks, it can display images with a wide dynamic range, i.e. images with denser blacks and brighter whites than standard images. HDR images offer more subtlety thanks to a greater number of light gradations. The nuances in the dark and very bright areas of the image are finer, resulting in more visible detail.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T review: a 4K UST laser projector - Son-Vidéo.com: blog (21)

Colors also benefit from this wide dynamic range, offering a more nuanced picture. Thanks to PurColor technology, color calibration is also optimized to avoid any deviation and to produce images with realistic colors.

Streaming: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video…

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T UST projector can be connected to an internet router via WiFi or using a network cable. This provides access to multiple services and apps such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Youtube, Deezer and Spotify. It is also possible to use the Samsung projector’s network connectivity to display images from a smartphone (mirroring function) and movies stored on a computer and shared over the local network, either by accessing folders directly or by using a dedicated app such as Plex.

Alexa, Google Assistant and AirPlay

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T’s network connectivity lets you use popular voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Once the projector is registered as a device in the Alexa or Google Home application, you can control it vocally using an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant speaker. You can start playing an episode of a Netflix or Amazon Prime Video series simply by asking! Thanks to AirPlay compatibility, you can also start playing any video from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and project the image on the screen.

2.2 channel stereo audio section

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T ultra-short throw 4K laser projector has a 2.2 channel stereo audio section with two drivers dedicated solely to the low frequencies. The amplification totals 30 watts and features different sound modes. Dolby Digital Plus audio tracks from TV shows and streaming services are supported so you can enjoy programs without the need for an external audio system. Note that DTS audio tracks are not supported.

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T 4K laser projector also features a Bluetooth controller that allows it to wirelessly receive and stream music played on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

HDMI and USB multimedia inputs

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T 4K laser projector has three HDMI connectors, one of which is ARC and eARC compatible, as well as a powered USB multimedia port (5V/0.5A). An optical digital audio output is also included so you can connect the projector to an AV receiver if needed, which you can also choose to connect to the ARC/eARC HDMI connector. WiFi connectivity is supplemented by an RJ45 network connector and a TV antenna socket for DTT television is also present.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T: configuration

For our review of the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T, we first projected the image onto a Lumene Movie Palace UHD 4K Extra Bright 240C ultra-short throw projection screen with a technical canvas and a Lumene Coliseum UHD 4K 240C motorized projection screen in our test room. We also experimented with projecting directly onto a wall and on a motorized projection screen in a living room with gray walls.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T review: a 4K UST laser projector - Son-Vidéo.com: blog (29)

We were able to watch shows on Netflix and 4K HDR movies stored on a USB flash drive via the Tizen interface. We also connected a 4K Blu-ray player to one of the HDMI inputs on the Samsung LSP7T.

Installation

Depending on whether you choose to project the image onto a wall or a projection screen, the installation is more or less complicated.

When projecting onto a wall (preferably smooth and white or even gray, we will see why later), simply place the video projector on the floor or on a TV cabinet, align it so it is perfectly parallel to the wall and, if necessary, adjust the height of the legs to align the vertical edges of the image. The test pattern in the settings menu (projector settings section) is very useful for this.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T review: a 4K UST laser projector - Son-Vidéo.com: blog (30)

When you want to project onto a screen, it is a little more complicated to get the image to fit perfectly into the frame. First you have to center the image, then find the right distance and adjust the height of the feet so that the edges of the image remain parallel.

Note: the higher the TV cabinet is, the higher the picture is, and the further you move the projector away from the screen, the larger the picture gets. It was tricky to get the right adjustments in our test room because the height of the Lumene Movie Palace UHD 4K Extra Bright 240C screen is not adjustable. We had to change our cabinet which was too high for another one that was a bit lower so that the image would fit in the frame.

With a motorized or manual projection screen, the setup is easier as you can raise and lower the canvas.

After a few minutes of careful adjusting, we managed to find the ideal settings. But be careful not to move the projector when dusting, otherwise you will have to start all over again!

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T: our impressions

Picture

We began our review of the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T with several 4K movies on a USB flash drive and on 4K Blu-ray: Alita: Battle Angel, Avatar, Interstellar and Mad Max: Fury Road. During the day when the room was even partially lit, the image was quite pale and sometimes lacked clarity, especially on a white wall or screen.

But as soon as you draw the curtains or lower the blinds, this Samsung projector reveals the true strength of DLP projectors: a sharp, clear and contrasted image.

The “Standard” mode is brighter than the Cinema mode and is well suited for daytime projection, especially for documentaries and TV talk shows. You can also keep the “Standard” mode on during the day while watching movies to improve image readability. However, it is important to note that the “Image clarity” parameter is automatically activated in standard mode. This setting concerns the smoothness of the image. If you don’t want a camcorder-like effect, we recommend disabling it.

When projecting movies and series in the evening and in an optimized environment (dark room, no light pollution), the Cinema mode is the most suitable. It is well calibrated and it is not necessary to go into the image settings to get good results. A handy feature for those who don’t want to spend time doing complex image calibrations.

Wall or screen?

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T video projector can project on a wall as well as on a projection screen. However, its brightness is a little too low to project a bright, high-contrast image on a white wall or screen during the day if the room isn’t dark.

Technical screen and white screen in a white room

The image brightness and contrast was significantly better on the ultra short throw technical screen. This meant it was possible to project images during the day in a moderately light room. The image was fairly legible but the contrast was not optimal. Note that the color of the walls greatly affect the contrast of the image, even with a technical canvas. In our test room, for example, the white was reflected daylight, which reduced the contrast on the screen.

Even with a technical canvas, we got the best results in a dark room.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T review: a 4K UST laser projector - Son-Vidéo.com: blog (57)

White screen and gray walls

If you don’t want to invest in a technical screen, projecting on a gray wall is quite satisfactory, as the color gray strongly reduces light pollution and improves contrast compared to a white wall. Our test with the movie Avatar, which is full of brightly colored scenes, was exemplary: once the room was dark, the contrast was excellent, the colors were rich and saturated, the blacks were intense and the whites were bright without causing fatigue. It wasn’t as spectacular as the technical canvas of the Lumene Movie Palace UHD 4K Extra Bright 240C screen, but the result was still very good.

On a white canvas unrolled on a gray background, the result during the day was a little better than with a white canvas on a white background. In the dark, the result was much better than with a room with white walls: the gray walls reflect much less ambient light onto the screen. The image was therefore more contrasted.

Sound

We were nicely surprised by the sound produced by the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T projector. The stereo configuration inevitably limited the spatialization of the sound, which didn’t envelop the viewer, but the lateral sound effects were precise and effectively emphasized movements and actions on the screen. It was enough to make us feel immersed in our program. The lows were also prominent and gave explosions some punch without any saturation, even at high volume. Overall, this Samsung UST projector did a lot better than many TVs we have tested. However, we would have liked a little more magnitude, like with certain soundbars.

Smart TV features

Those familiar with Samsung TVs and their Tizen Smart TV interface won’t feel lost as it is also used on the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T projector. We were therefore pleased to find the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen with the main streaming and online video content apps. Scrolling to the left takes you to the application catalog, the sources and the settings menu. Intuitive and reactive, the Tizen interface is as good as Android and is very pleasant to use on a daily basis.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T review: a 4K UST laser projector - Son-Vidéo.com: blog (85)

Movies stored on a USB hard drive can be accessed very quickly and easily, just like movies shared over the local network. The default interface is not very slick. Browsing folders isn’t as pleasant as it is in the Plex app, for example.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T: compared to…

Optoma HD35UST

Brighter (3600 lumens) but with a lower definition (HD 1080p only), this Optoma HD35UST projector is more suitable than the Samsung for projection in a room during the day, especially with a projection screen equipped with a technical canvas. But the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T has the advantage in terms of image definition (UHD 4K HDR), colorimetry and connectivity. It is more expensive but works fine alone as it provides access to DTT television and several streaming services without having to add another source.

Optoma CinemaX UHZ65UST

The Optoma CinemaX UHZ65UST projector is similarly priced to the Samsung model and offers the same features: Ultra High Definition 4K with HDR, three HDMI connectors, network and Internet connectivity, an Android interface to access multiple online services… However, the Optoma model has an additional advantage: a maximum brightness of 3500 lumens compared to only 2000 lumens for the Samsung projector, which makes it more suited to projecting images during the day. This difference diminishes, however, when projecting in a dark room or in a darkened environment, where Samsung is on par with Optoma in terms of contrast and HDR rendering.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T: conclusion

The Samsung The Premiere LSP7T ultra short throw projector offers an interesting alternative to the living room TV, provided that you use it to project onto a technical screen or a gray wall to maintain a minimum of contrast during the day (ideally with the curtains drawn). In the evening or in a dark room, it will delight you with its detailed images and vivid colors, especially with HDR video content.

Samsung The Premiere LSP7T review: a 4K UST laser projector - Son-Vidéo.com: blog (90)

The audio section was compelling, with powerful lows, no saturation, and pretty wide spatialization.

The three HDMI ports, the multimedia USB port and the network connectivity offer the user multiple entertainment options with the possibility of connecting a Blu-ray player, direct access to Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV… but also the ability to play multimedia files stored on USB devices or shared over the local network.

What downsides were there? The projector’s brightness fell a little short when projecting during the day in a bright room, even with a technical screen, but this is the case with many projectors. The lack of DTS support is also frustrating for fans of this audio format. Finally, in standby mode, the power supply of this video projector emits a small hum that can be annoying if you place the Samsung The Premiere LSP7T in a bedroom! But all you need is a smart plug or a power strip with a switch to address this.

What we liked

  • The attractive design and good finish quality
  • The rich colors and good HDR management
  • The Tizen interface and the numerous available services
  • The good sound reproduction, especially in the lows

What we would have liked

  • For it to have been silent when in standby
  • A multi-channel surround sound soundbar
  • DTS compatibility
  • A matte black version
